Job Description: Master Electrician (theater/outdoor venue)

Type of Employment: Seasonal

Pay Rate: Install: $1,500/week; Operation: $1,200/week

Contract Dates: May 4th, 2026- September 20th, 2026

Location: Medora, ND (housing provided if needed)

The Medora Musical and Gospel Brunch are two cornerstone productions of the summer entertainment season in Medora, North Dakota, presented by the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation and produced by RWS Global. 

The Medora Musical is a live, family-friendly, outdoor musical variety show that celebrates the spirit of the American West, the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, and the rugged beauty of the Badlands. Performed nightly in the stunning Burning Hills Amphitheatre, the show features a professional cast of singers, dancers, and musicians, along with live horses, and fireworks. The show runs from early June through early September, drawing thousands of guests from across the country. 

The Gospel Brunch is a joyful morning tradition hosted at the Town Square Show Hall, where a full Southern-style brunch is served alongside an uplifting, high-energy gospel concert. Featuring inspiring vocalists and a live band, the brunch highlights Medora’s spirit of hospitality and community, with performances rooted in faith, hope, and tradition. 

Both productions emphasize professionalism, creativity, and guest experience. Team members joining either or both productions can expect a fast-paced, collaborative environment with a strong sense of purpose and camaraderie. These shows are more than entertainment; they are a vital part of preserving and celebrating the unique cultural and historical fabric of Medora. 

Position Overview: 

The Master Electrician is responsible for executing and maintaining the lighting design for both the Medora Musical and the Gospel Brunch. This includes oversight of all lighting systems, power distribution, equipment maintenance, and the supervision of lighting crew members during load-in, tech, performances, and strike. The Master Electrician is also responsible for curating all follow spot cue sheets in collaboration with the lighting designer and calling follow spot cues during performances. The ideal candidate is a highly organized leader with strong technical knowledge and a passion for live entertainment. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with the lighting designer to implement and maintain the lighting design for both productions 
  • Coordinate lighting hang, focus, and strike in accordance with the production schedule 
  • Oversee lighting equipment inventory, maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting 
  • Program and maintain lighting consoles and networked lighting systems (ETC preferred) 
  • Manage and lead the lighting crew during load-ins, tech rehearsals, performances, and strikes 
  • Create and maintain follow spot cue sheets in coordination with the lighting designer 
  • Call follow spot cues during performances for the duration of the season 
  • Ensure all lighting and electrical systems are installed safely and in compliance with NEC, OSHA, and venue-specific safety guidelines 
  • Maintain updated paperwork including light plots, channel hookups, and dimmer schedules 
  • Assist in show support, including operating or calling lighting cues during performances as needed 
  • Coordinate with other departments (audio, scenic, rigging, stage management) for safe and efficient operations 

Essential Duties:

  • Install and mount lighting, audio and AV equipment, 
  • Install new cable runs while working on a ladder
  • Terminate cable ends, like phoenix connectors
  • Troubleshoot light show elements
  • Support Technical Director in general technical installation

Qualifications: 

  • Proven experience as a Master Electrician or lead electrician in a professional or academic theater setting 
  • Strong working knowledge of ETC lighting systems, intelligent fixtures, and DMX/network protocols
  • Experience with low voltage fixtures and wireless practical units
  • Experience calling follow spot cues or working in show-calling capacity preferred
  • Comfortable working at heights and in outdoor environments
  • Proficient with lighting software (Lightwright, Vectorworks, ETC Eos Family) preferred
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills 
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work long hours, including weekends and evenings 
  • Valid driver’s license  
  • Degree or equivalent experience in theatrical lighting or technical theatre

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

Required: High School Diploma or GED

Preferred: Vocational or technical training – Field of Study: welding, engineering, rigging, carpentry, electronics, audio, construction, electrician. The knowledge needed for this position are often not found in traditional college educations. Technical theatre education will be the closest thing, but so would any education in audio, lighting, electronics, rigging, welding, carpentry, design, 3D modeling software. It’s a myriad of technical skills that makes this a helpful education. 

EXPERIENCE:

2 to 3 years of experience in the technical entertainment field

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Valid driver’s license required. OSHA and similar construction safety certification(s) helpful.

Key Competencies:

  • Basic knowledge of a working theatrical space - hanging/focusing lighting instruments, running cabling, cable management, basic knots, awareness of other aspects of production and their needs from your position and from the space, ability to interpret and create light plots, basic paperwork
  • Portable power distribution - familiarity with system preferred
  • Solutions-based troubleshooting
  • Friendly and proactive personality
  • Ability to interface with clients, coworkers, and laborers to maintain a positive work environment
  • Organizational skills – in office and on-site
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and customer service - communicates through various mediums such as email, text, phone call, and in-person conversations.
  • Awareness of dangers and hazards associated with job functions and willingness to mitigate those risks
  • Expert troubleshooting of technical issues in a theatrical/production setting

Work Environment: While on-site, frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quarters. Master Electricians will often be on-site and need to work in hot/humid, cold/freezing, rain, and snow conditions to complete the job before the deadline.

Physical Effort: Moderate – Physical effort represented by frequent handling of heavy objects (approx. 50 lbs.) and materials, or heavy hand tools. Electricians should be prepared to work at height in lifts when necessary.

Hazards: Frequent existing or potential hazards. Moderate existing or potential hazards. While on-site, there is regular exposure to: working at heights over 50 feet, working in and around heavy equipment
